The 3rd Annual Volvo For Life Awards Celebrates Everyday Heroes
The March 24, 2005 awards ceremony in New York City highlights the fact that a single person can make a huge contribution to problems affecting our world. The E-Accountability Foundation congratulates all the winners, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, and anyone anywhere in the world who works to help others.

Do You Know a Hero?
"Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo therefore is, and must remain, safety."

The courage to act. The conscience to care. The character to do what is right. This is the promise of Volvo – and of the Volvo for life Awards program.

The Volvo for life Awards honors your heroes: ordinary people who go above and beyond the call of duty to help others in Volvo's core areas of Safety, Quality of life and Environment.

We are seeking nominees who act beyond the ordinary requirements of their profession or daily routine. We will especially consider efforts that benefit many people, improve the natural environment or help an underserved community.

Originality, creativity, initiative and impact will also be taken into account.

Alexandra Scott Butterfly Award

IN MEMORY OF ALEXANDRA SCOTT
If you look around these days, you may notice people wearing a pin that looks a lot like the butterfly on this page.

This pin was created by artist Romero Britto, in memory of Alexandra Scott – the winner of a special Volvo for life Award in our first year. But what does a butterfly have to do with an eight year old girl? If you ask someone wearing one of these pins, they might tell you this story.

Alexandra Scott was a little girl with cancer. She was diagnosed when she was only a year old.

Alex was a very special person, and she knew other kids had cancer too – just like she did.

So, at age four, Alex started a lemonade stand to raise money for children's cancer research – "so those kids can get better, too."

When we met Alex at age seven, her lemonade stand had become an international movement, with kids around the world selling lemonade to fight cancer. We thought her story was so amazing, we created a special Volvo for life Award, just for her.

When Alex died of cancer, at age eight, she had raised over $700,000. Now her dream lives on, with her family continuing to raise money for her fund.

Shortly before she died, Alex told her parents a story about butterflies. Since then, the butterfly has become a symbol of Alex's life and her fight to stop cancer.

That's why, in Alex's memory, we created a special award called the Butterfly Award...for a child hero who – like Alex – helps make the world a better place. So when you see this butterfly, think of Alex – and of her beautiful dream of helping others that lives on today.

Each year, the Butterfly Award will go to a child who – like Alex – has shown extraordinary conscience, care and character in helping others.

The award is a $25,000 contribution to a charity selected by the winning child hero and his or her family. The Butterfly Award recipient and family members will also have a chance to attend the final Volvo for life Awards ceremony in New York City as special guests. Judges for this award will include Volvo and the Scott family. Volvo will make a $25,000 contribution to Alex's Fund every year her family serves as judges.
