William Thompson jr. on school construction
The NYC Comptroller William Thompson jr. put out a report more than five years ago that showed an unmet need for school facilities in NYC of $28.43 billion, by far the greatest unmet need in any category of the city's infrastructure. Mayor Bloomberg has recently announced plans to spend $5 billion alone on a plan to develop the West side of Manhattan, including helping to build a new stadium for the Olympics and the Jets. Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff says this project is "by far the most important economic development project that we can undertake," and that "nowhere else can this city invest so wisely in its future." Except, perhaps, to give this money to the public school kids who do not have classrooms and supplies? |
